What Are the Early Signs of Burnout at Work?

Burnout can creep up on anyone, and the associated emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion that follows periods of excessive and/or prolonged stress (most often, due to work), is something that we all should be on the lookout for. But what if there were earlier signs of burnout that we could detect? Ones that would allow you to stop burnout in its tracks before it escalates.

The good news is, there is! Burnout shows early warning signs and, by naming and noticing them, we’re much more likely to be able to intervene and prevent extreme cases. Keep an eye out for the following signs of burnout in your own attitude and approach to work:

Loss of enthusiasm – a lack of passion or energy for tasks that once excited you, which can lead to finding it difficult to engage with your work with any sort of enthusiasm (e.g., you might find you’re starting your day with a feeling of dread about having to work).

Cynicism towards work – adopting a negative, detached attitude towards your job, your colleagues, or the organization that you work for. This can look like questioning the motives of others, doubting the value or purpose of your work, and ultimately feeling alienated in your professional relationships.

Feeling ineffective – doubting your ability to succeed, even in areas where you once felt confident. This can often translate into a sense that no amount of work or effort will lead to meaningful progress or outcomes in your work, thereby causing self-doubt.

Increased irritability – frequent frustration towards others or even routine tasks that would have once been easy to brush off. As a result, this can also mean having a more difficult time regaining a sense of calm after experience a stressor at work.
