Making the Most of Your Job Search During the Holidays

When December hits, the holidays can create a bit of a pause in the job market, but that doesn’t mean your search has to stop. In fact, with a strategic approach this slower period could give you a real advantage.

Start by taking advantage of the slowdown. Many companies are planning January starts, so being ready now means you can apply early and get noticed before the post-holiday rush. Review job postings carefully, prepare tailored resumes and cover letters, and set alerts for roles that match your strengths. Being proactive and applying now could position you as the first choice when hiring ramps up.

Use the quieter time to reconnect. Reach out to former colleagues, mentors, or industry contacts with authentic messages.  Wish them a happy holiday, share a brief update on your year and your current search, and suggest a coffee or walk to connect during the days off. Building up relationships now keeps you visible and top-of-mind when opportunities arise.

Finally, take a pause. Reflect on what you truly want from your next role. Consider what energizes you, what impact you want to make, and what skills you want to grow. Perhaps you want to use this time to refine your elevator pitch, update your LinkedIn profile, or work on your portfolio.

The holidays don’t have to be a full stop. Thoughtful action, intentional connection, and reflection can leave you ready to enter the new year confident, focused, and positioned to land a role that fits your strengths and goals.
