How Can Public Sector Summer Jobs Attract Gen Z Workers?

This summer, students and new grads are facing a tougher job market than usual. According to Indeed, summer job postings in Canada are down 44% compared to last year. That means more competition — and a need to think outside the box.

One option many overlook? Government jobs. As Canada faces a growing labour shortage — with fewer working-age people and more retirees — the public sector is actively looking to recruit new talent. And that opens a door for Gen Z ‘ers to get hired.

But will they choose government jobs?

Right now, it’s often not their first choice. Many young people see the public sector as slow, outdated, or not very diverse.

So, what could make a young person want to work in government? Research shows that three things matter most:

1. Their perception of the public sector– If government jobs are seen as meaningful, diverse, and innovative, young people are more likely to apply.

2. Their level of public service motivation – Gen Z cares about making a difference. If a job supports a cause or a community they care about, they’ll pay more attention.

3. Their desired job attributes –  Security, good pay, and benefits matter. Their ideal jobs also offer growth, flexibility, and a healthy work environment too.

So, for those young people job hunting this summer, now is the time to check out roles through Job Bank or the Canada Summer Jobs program. You might be surprised by the variety of opportunities available — not just in administration, but in communications, tech, policy, environmental work, and more.

If you care about community impact, equity, or building a better future, government work could be a great fit for your summer job – or perhaps even your career. And besides getting hired, you may find yourself helping shape the future of public sector culture from the inside out!
