As a Registered Counselling Therapist and career counsellor, I’ve come to see that the way we experience work has a huge impact on our mental health, confidence, and overall quality of life. This is a core part of why 2SLGBTQI+ career counselling matters so much to me.
The Reality Behind the Progress
Something that has stood out to me is that, even today, many 2SLGBTQI+ people are still navigating workplaces where they don’t always feel safe or fully accepted. As allies, it’s easy to assume we’ve come further than we actually have. But for some people, microaggressions, assumptions, or feeling like they have to hide parts of themselves are still part of everyday work life.
Chosen Family and Representation
For some queer clients, chosen family plays a central role in their lives. They may also have a harder time finding mentors, leaders, or role models who share similar lived experiences. Feeling represented and knowing there are people who understand your experience can make a real difference when exploring career options and imagining what’s possible.
Why Career Counselling Makes a Difference
That’s why I think career counselling can be so valuable. It gives people space to talk about all the pieces that influence work, not just what’s on a resume. Together, we can explore what matters most to them, build confidence, and identify workplaces where they feel respected, supported, and able to be themselves.
Building a Career That Fits Who You Are
Everyone deserves the opportunity to build a career that fits who they are. As therapists, we have the privilege of helping clients discover work that supports not only their goals, but their overall well-being and sense of self. If you’re navigating career decisions and want support from someone who understands the unique challenges 2SLGBTQI+ professionals face, we’re here to help. Book a consultation with one of our career counsellors and start exploring what’s possible for your career and your well-being.
