Networking can feel like a big, scary word—especially if you’re exploring a career in a field where you don’t already know anyone. But here’s the good news: you don’t need a network to start! You just need the courage to reach out.
One of the best tools for connecting with people is LinkedIn. If you don’t already have an account, I encourage all my clients to open a basic profile for career exploration and networking purposes. You can use the search bar to find people working in the role or field you’re curious about—by searching “firefighter”, “data analyst”, or “counselling therapist”, for example. Filters are your best friend here: narrow your search by location (like Nova Scotia or Ontario) or even by shared connections, like alumni from your school.
Once you scroll through a few profiles and find someone who stands out, send a personalized message to get the conversation started. Keep it short, friendly, and actionable, like this:
Hi [Name],
I came across your profile and noticed you’re working as a [Job Title] at [Organization]. I’m exploring [Field] as a career path and would love to learn more about your experience. Would you be open to a quick 20-minute information interview over Zoom or phone?
Cheers,
[Your Name]
Not everyone will reply, and that’s okay! Finding the right person takes persistence, but every conversation you have brings valuable insight into the field—and who knows, it could even lead to your next opportunity.
Remember, there’s an exchange happening here – you’re not only asking them for information for your own career exploration but you’re kindly boosting their ego by being curious about their career and life. The hardest part is taking that first step.
